Sexual function concerns are common and can affect men of all ages. The two most common conditions are erectile dysfunction (ED) and premature ejaculation (PE), both of which can significantly affect confidence, relationships and quality of life.
Rather than simply prescribing medication, our specialist GPs aim to identify the underlying causes of your symptoms with their premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction clinics. Our expert sexual health GP’s develop a personalised treatment plan designed to improve both your sexual function and your overall health.
Conditions We Treat
ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the persistent inability to achieve or maintain an erection suitable for satisfactory sexual activity. While occasional erection difficulties are common, persistent symptoms should be assessed.
Symptoms may include:
- Difficulty achieving an erection
- Difficulty maintaining an erection
- Reduced firmness of erections
- Fewer morning erections
- Reduced confidence or sexual satisfaction
Erectile dysfunction often has more than one contributing factor.
Common causes include:
- Cardiovascular disease, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes
- Low testosterone
- Medication side effects
- Stress, anxiety or depression
- Poor sleep
- Relationship factors
Because ED may be an early warning sign of an underlying health condition, identifying the cause is an important part of treatment.
Assessment begins with a confidential consultation with one of our specialist GPs. Your assessment may include:
- Medical and sexual history
- Medication review
- Lifestyle assessment
- Investigations where appropriate
Your personalised erectile dysfunction treatment plan may include:
- Lifestyle optimisation
- Medication
- Hormone treatment
- Referral for psychosexual therapy where appropriate
- Referral for specialist assessment where required
Many men experience significant improvement once the underlying causes have been identified and treated.
PREMATURE EJACULATION
Premature ejaculation (PE) occurs when ejaculation happens sooner than desired during sexual activity and causes distress or reduces sexual satisfaction.
Symptoms may include:
- Ejaculating sooner than desired
- Difficulty delaying ejaculation
- Reduced control over ejaculation
- Anxiety surrounding sexual activity
- Reduced confidence or sexual satisfaction
Premature ejaculation may be lifelong (present from first sexual experiences) or acquired (developing later in life). It often has more than one contributing factor.
Common causes include:
- Stress, anxiety or depression
- Relationship factors
- Erectile dysfunction
- Increased penile sensitivity
- Prostatitis
- Thyroid disorders
Identifying the underlying cause helps guide the most appropriate treatment.
